Our President's Letter

September 22, 2014

Dear Members of Delta Gamma At-Large,

Carol Sabel, President

I am honored and excited to have been elected President of Delta Gamma At-Large and to serve the needs of the chapter for the next two years. We have a committed and energetic board that has already been working hard to develop our strategic plan. Before revealing our plans for the future, I would like to thank the outgoing board members for their service and dedication, including; Pat Schroeder – president; Terri Garcia – secretary; Barb Haag-Heitman – treasurer; Diane Dressler – faculty counselor for Marquette; Mary Polchert – leadership succession; and Kathryn Schroeter – research chair.

I am excited to report that the board has been working to develop a strategic plan to take us through the next two years. The strategic plan has been built around the requirements for the STTI Chapter Key Award, with the thought of developing the support structure needed to apply for the Key Award. This year we will focus on a needs assessment so that we can apply in the next biennium, which starts in 2015. This support structure will start with a task force committed to examining the specific requirements for applying for the Key Award and developing the means to reach the goals. Maureen Greene, our Advisor to the Board, has agreed to guide the work of this task force. We would like at least four other members to be part of this task force; possibly two members who have been with the chapter for some time and two newer members. Anyone interested, feel free to contact me at The specifics of the strategic plan can be found under the strategic plan tab on the Delta Gamma At-Large home page.

On September 17th we held our third annual Awards Banquet at the Lunda Room in Marquette University. It was a great evening dedicated to honoring those members that have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their areas of practice. This year we honored Margaret (Peg) Rauschenberger and Darlene Weis as Nurse Educators of the Year; Marie Golanowski and Patricia Schroeder as Nurse Administrators of the Year; and Peggy Troy as the Living Legend. A social hour was followed by dinner and presentations. Everyone had a wonderful time and after hearing the inspiring words of the awardees, left feeling a bit more committed to the work they do.

We have two more great events coming up very soon. They include the American Nurse Joint Chapter Project and the Research Conference. The American Nurse Joint Chapter Project is a collaboration of the southeastern Wisconsin chapters of STTI. We will be showing the film “The American Nurse” for the first time in the state of Wisconsin on October 1st. See the flyer or information below for details. Tickets are limited and on a first come/first serve basis. The DGAL Research Conference will be held on the evening of November 6th on the Alverno College campus. We hope to see you there. Be sure to view the events calendar for more upcoming activities.

The goal for this year is focused on membership and retention. As such, we are planning events at both Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Wheaton Franciscan to increase our visibility and recruit community members. We are also trying to develop task forces for specific activities in order to increase the number of active members and encourage leadership among members. These task forces will be short term commitments that are dedicated to specific projects. Watch e-mails and the website for opportunities.

On a last note, I would like to give a shout out to Barb Haag-Heitman and Marilyn Frenn, both active members of DGAL, who will be inducted as Fellows into the American Academy of Nursing in October. Congratulations to both on your outstanding achievements!

I look forward to a fun and productive year, and hope that you will take the opportunity to get involved in some of the great activities that DGAL has to offer.
